Football Saguenay: Growing Youth Flag Football in Quebec

In the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region of Quebec, Canada, sports are a paramount piece in the community. This wasn’t always the case. For many years, organized opportunities to play football and flag football felt impossible to come by.

That’s where Guillaume Simard and Football Saguenay stepped in.

What started as an effort to create more structure for the sport has grown into a thriving organization, dedicated to providing athletes of all ages a place to learn, compete, and belong. Through youth programs, leagues, and development opportunities, Football Saguenay is helping pave the way for football and flag football to grow in the region while instilling confidence in young athletes.

Building Football Opportunities in Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean

In 2024, Football Saguenay was created with a clear goal: to grow football and flag football in the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region.

Over time, the organization has built a range of programs designed to support players at different stages of their athletic journey. From youth development initiatives to NFL Flag leagues and senior flag football competitions, Football Saguenay produced programs that allow players to start young and stay involved in the sport for years to come. 

For Guillaume Simard, the motivation behind the league has always been about more than just competition. 

“Our mission is simple: grow the game of football and flag football in our region and create meaningful opportunities for athletes of all ages. Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean is a passionate sports region, and we wanted to build a structure that allows young athletes to develop, compete, and stay involved in football. The goal is not only performance but also community building and leadership development.”

Football Saguenay provides a structured pathway for football and flag football in Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean. The league also empowers athletes of all ages to foster their skills, become leaders, and ultimately build a stronger community together.

Helping Young Athletes Grow Beyond the Game

As we all know, football is known for its intensity and strategy; however, the impact it has on athletes, coaches, and the overall community surpasses far beyond the field.

Through programs run by Football Saguenay, athletes develop critical life skills alongside their athletic abilities. Players learn discipline through training, teamwork through competition, and resilience from both their wins and losses.
