RESTO Athletic

We’re excited to share that, starting today, May 1st, 2025, RESTO Athletic is introducing DTF (Direct-to-Film) printing for custom t-shirts. This launch expands how we help teams, fans, and businesses bring their designs to life, not just on the field, but everywhere in between.

If you haven’t heard of DTF printing, you’re not alone. Until recently, some of us at RESTO Athletic were, too. That’s why we’re sharing this overview to help you understand what makes DTF printing different, how it compares to sublimation, and why it’s a great option for your next set of tees.

What is DTF (Direct to Film) Printing?

Direct-to-Film (DTF) is a newer printing technique that allows full-color designs to be transferred directly onto fabric using heat and pressure. Your design is first printed onto a special film, then applied to the garment using a heat press and adhesive powder that melts and bonds to the fabric. The result is a sharp, vibrant, durable design that works especially well on cotton but can also be used on a variety of fabrics.

DTF printing began taking shape in the early 2000s as a solution to the limitations of traditional printing methods like screen printing and heat transfers. It offered an easier way to print complex, colorful designs without the need for screens or long prep times. By the late 2010s, DTF gained popularity as a more flexible alternative to direct-to-garment printing, especially for small runs and on-demand jobs.

Unlike other methods that may require minimum quantities or specific fabric types, DTF is flexible, quick, and reliable, even on small orders.

How is DTF Different from Sublimation?

At RESTO Athletic, we’re known for our sublimated uniforms, which involve fusing ink directly into the fabric. Sublimation works best on polyester materials, which is why we use it for sports performance wear. DTF offers a exceptional alternative when you want to print on cotton, in casual wear or branded apparel for fans and staff.

Here’s a simple comparison:

With DTF, we’re opening up a new lane for those who want everyday shirts, not just sportswear, with custom designs that pop.
